On Thursday, we held an inspiring Training of Trainers session in Chabalanda Village, Chief Musokotwane of Kazungula District, as part of the “Building Cultural Accountability Mechanisms” project. This gathering brought together over 370 women and youths eager to become champions of change, promote human rights, and ensure transparency in their communities.

We began with a focus on human rights, emphasizing the importance of advocating for and protecting the rights of all individuals, especially women, children, and persons with disabilities. The session highlighted how human rights are foundational to creating just and inclusive communities, where everyone’s dignity is respected and upheld.
Following this, we explored the topic of public funds, discussing their crucial role in the development of communities. The session emphasized the importance of transparency in the allocation and use of public resources, highlighting the need for proper management and accountability in government programs and services.
The discussion on social and democratic accountability tools equipped participants with practical knowledge to demand transparency and ensure that public funds are used effectively. Tools like the Community Scorecard, which allows communities to assess and hold local service providers accountable, and the Service Charter, which outlines the standards of service that citizens should expect, were thoroughly covered. Additionally, we introduced public hearings as a method for citizens to voice concerns and hold leaders accountable for the management of resources.
By the end of the session, participants were empowered to use these tools to ensure public resources are allocated fairly and used to meet the needs of all community members. Through action plans, they demonstrated their commitment to fostering a culture of accountability and transparency, ensuring that public funds are used for the common good.
This program was made possible through the generous support of GIZ,German International Cooperation, and co-funding by the European Union in Zambia under the Enabling Access to Justice, Civil Society Participation, and Transparency Programme.
