Day 2 of the APN Assembly was about knowledge production and the stories we tell ourselves about African philanthropy. We reflected on how indigenous insights and wisdom contribute to research, decision-making, and development. We also looked at the importance of language—both vernacular and rhetoric—in fostering meaningful community participation as rightful investors in their development. Key discussions explored how philanthropy can counter inequalities, address power imbalances, and build solidarity around narratives that position African philanthropy as a transformative force for community-led change.

Brian Kagoro, Managing Director of Programs at Open Society Foundations, delivered an inspiring talk on Decolonizing Knowledge & Centering African Wisdom, setting the tone for the day’s thought-provoking sessions.
Dialogue Sessions
The Disruptive Role of Truth Tellers in Communities explored how media and artists amplify truth, even under challenging circumstances, and the need for collaboration with these disruptors.
Community-Led Approaches to Sustainable Development examined traditional African practices like pooling resources and collective rituals, emphasizing their relevance in modern development frameworks.
Feminism & Power Dynamics in Crisis Response highlighted the role of African feminist philanthropy in tackling crises like pandemics and anti-gender movements.
The Role of Language in Development & Social Justice unpacked how both colonial and indigenous languages shape knowledge and inclusion in development work.
Thought Stations
Interactive “thought stations” brought participants together to exchange tools, strategies, and lived experiences. Topics ranged from reclaiming Basarwa land rights in Botswana to launching Africa’s first fiscal hosting platform. The “law of two feet” encouraged dynamic discussions and valuable networking.
Day 2 was a powerful reminder of the potential in reclaiming African wisdom and practices to drive equity and community-led transformation. #APNAssembly #AfricanPhilanthropy #DecolonizingKnowledge
